The best free parks in Dubai with a proper playground

A park is only useful to a family if it ticks four boxes: shade at four in the afternoon, equipment that has not been baked into brittle plastic, somewhere to park, and toilets. Plenty of Dubai parks miss at least one. Here are the ones that do not.

What makes a Dubai playground actually usable

Between May and October, an unshaded metal slide is dangerous, not fun. Look for sail shades over the equipment itself rather than over the benches, and rubber matting instead of sand, which holds heat for hours. Municipality parks are generally better equipped than community ones, but community parks are quieter and closer to home.

The four o'clock test

Our rule is simple: if the equipment is in full sun at four in the afternoon, the park only works in winter. All the parks below pass the test on at least part of their play area.

Jumeirah and Al Safa

Al Safa Park 2 has the widest range of equipment for different ages in one place, which matters when your children are four years apart. It gets busy after five on a Friday.

Al Khawaneej and Al Warqa

Quranic Park is the most surprising public space in the city, and the play area is only part of it. Al Warqa 2 Park is smaller and less known, which is exactly why it works on a weekend morning.

Deira and Garhoud

Al Garhoud Park 2 is a neighbourhood park rather than a destination, but it is well kept and rarely crowded.

The new communities

JVT Community Park shows what developers now build as standard: shaded equipment, a running loop and a fenced toddler area. If you live in a newer community, check your own park before driving across town.

Practical points

• Municipality parks charge an entry fee in a handful of cases, usually five dirhams. The ones listed here are free.
• Bring water. Very few parks have working fountains.
• Weekday mornings during term time are almost empty.
